Watch [HD] The Moon through my Orion SkyQuest XT8 8 [HD] The Moon through my Orion SkyQuest XT8 8" Dobsonian Reflector Telescope astronomy
Jan 09, 2012
This is the moon through my XT8. It's hard to make out due to the lack of a filter. The camera is also not ideal. Looking through the scope reveals a crisp clear view of the moon. I used a Celestron 8mm-24mm zoom eyepiece. I was in my backyard in Yarmouth. Nova scotia and the skies weren't very clear (light pollution and clouds). This is more or less just to test my in a dark environment.

Our second Telescope Amnesty event, where visitors met members of Astronomy Societies who gave advice on how to use their telescopes/binoculars and how to get involved in astronomy as an amateur. The evening was rounded off by a special planetarium show by Pete Lawrence & Ninian Boyle of the BBC Sky at Night team. Thanks to our co-hosts HantsAstro, and also to Cody Astronomy Society, Hampshire Astronomical Group and Reading Astronomical Society. This event was part of International Year of Astronomy 2009. The film was made by Martin Sabin-Smith (www.workingimage.co.uk), unfortunately YouTube has messed up the quality during conversion but we hope you enjoy it.

Watch Black Hole Meltdown in the Galactic Center Video Black Hole Meltdown in the Galactic Center
Jan 27, 2012
Black hole extravaganza in 1080p. From ESOcast. Not long ago, watching something being ripped apart as it falls towards a giant black hole would be science fiction. This is now reality. Observers under dark skies, far from the bright city lights, can marvel at the splendor of the Milky Way, arching in an imposing band across the sky. Zooming in towards the center of our galaxy, about 25000 light years away, you can see that it is composed of myriads of stars. This is a pretty impressive sight, but much is hidden from view by interstellar dust, and astronomers need to look using a different wavelength, the infrared, that can penetrate the dust clouds. With large telescopes, astronomers can then see in detail the swarm of stars circling the supermassive black hole, in the same way that the Earth orbits the Sun. The Galactic Center harbors the closest supermassive black hole known, and the one that is also the largest in terms of its angular diameter on the sky, making it the best choice for a detailed study of black holes. This black hole's mass is a hefty four million times that of the Sun, earning it the title of supermassive black hole. Although it is huge, this black hole is currently supplied with little material and is not shining brightly. But this is about to change. Using ESO's Very Large Telescope, a team of astronomers has discovered a new object that is heading almost straight towards the black hole at vertiginous speed. The object is not a star, but a cloud of ...

From EsoCast, Dr. J. explores the upheaval in our understanding of the universe brought on by the discovery that the universe is not just expanding, but is accelerating outward at an ever increasing pace. Was Einstein wrong? Are we missing something crucial in our understanding of how it all began? Either way, this is one of the most exciting scientific discoveries in a long time.

A new telescope instrument called KMOS will use 24 tiny "pick off" mirrors to look at individual galaxies. It's being built in Scotland but will soon be fitted to the side of one of the giant telescopes at the VLT in Chile. Note, to clarify the introduction, the infrared detectors within KMOS form part of the overall instrument. KMOS is being built at the United Kingdom Astronomy Technology Centre

Good Samaritan Hospital Patient First in California to Receive Telescope Implant for Macular Degeneration
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 30, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Physicians at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles successfully implanted the FDA-approved eye telescope, a first in California.  The first-of-kind telescope implant is integral to CentraSightâ„¢, a new patient care program for treating patients with end-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the most advanced form of AMD and the leading cause of blindness in older Americans.  It is the only medical/surgical option that improves visual acuity by reducing the impact of the central vision blind spot caused by end-stage AMD. Tant: Galileo opened heavens for scientific discovery
It has been 400 years now since the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei used a new device called a telescope to view the heavens. It has been 50 years since I first viewed the moon and planets through a telescope my parents gave me as a Christmas gift in 1959, when I was 12 years old. When I first gazed at the moon and the planets with the little instrument, I felt some of the same awe, humility and wonder that Galileo himself must have felt on those long-ago nights in Italy when he aimed his epoch-making instrument to the skies in 1609.
